Summary

The narrative revolves around Riley Flynn’s return to Crockett Island to live with his family after serving his prison sentence. It was created and directed by Mike Flanagan. A new priest replaces their aged Monsignor Pruitt, alongside Flynn, bringing miracles and fresh life to the dying island.

When miracles occur in the church, the exhausted residents of the cash-strapped island find their faith revitalized. However, an unknown menace lies ahead, as weird happenings keep the residents of the island on edge.

An Explanation of the Midnight Mass’s ending:

The Real Father, Paul Hill

After the previous priest, Monsignor Pruitt of Crockett Island, leaves the island church, a new priest, Father Paul Hill, takes his place. People initially react with astonishment, but this quickly turns into devotion.

As the story progresses, it becomes clear that the previous priest was never replaced. On the other hand, he had just become a young man again after an amazing miracle in Jerusalem. The story says that Pruitt, who was getting older and had dementia, got separated from his other priests and got stuck in a sandstorm.

He discovers an antique edifice that has emerged from the sandstorm. Something strikes him and absorbs his blood as he enters it. When the angel-like thing hears the priest repeat the Lord’s prayer, it forces him to swallow its blood, after which he is revived and granted a new life. On top of that, Pruitt has returned to his old, youthful self, his looks and health entirely restored.

He brings the angel back to the island to bless the inhabitants.

What became of Riley Flynn?

Riley Flynn is going to jail for four years because he killed a child in a horrible car accident while he was drunk. He used to be a fervent Christian, but now he’s an agnostic who questions every miracle with a reasonable mind. When he returns to his native island, the new wonders pique his interest.

When the new priest lies to him about another town inhabitant, he goes to see the priest and finds the weird creature pouring its blood into a cup. The beast assaults him and drains his blood. He was quickly revived, though. However, it comes with some unpleasant side effects: like Father Pruitt, he can no longer go outside in the sun because it will burn him, and he has a dark, insatiable thirst for human blood.

After much prodding from the priest about his new life, he departs to visit his old flame, Erin, and takes her out on a boat to the sea. He exposes the truth about himself and declares his love for her there. Before Erin could react to the new developments, the sun rises and burns Riley’s body to ash, exactly as he desired.

Easter Vigil at Midnight

The narrative leads up to the Easter Vigil midnight mass, which ultimately occurs. The town’s doctor, as well as her mother, Mildred, and Erin, are all well aware of what is going on.

They try to leave the island on a boat to aid the people but discover that the escape route has been closed by the mayor, who is doing the same thing as the priest. The island’s energy supply will be shut off soon, as will phone signals.

The residents of the island assemble around the church where the revelation happens. Father Pruitt exposes his secrets to the congregation, and the angel enters the church as well. People are given a cup of poison and told that it will bring them back to life because Angel’s blood is already flowing through their veins.

Most individuals take the poison and wait for the miracle, which happens quickly. Unfortunately, it comes with an insatiable desire. The changed ones start eating the one who doesn’t want to get up, and chaos breaks out. The three ladies, together with the sheriff, fight back and burn down the entire town as the sun rises. The altered individuals are exposed to the rising sun and perish.

On the opposite hand, the Angel tries to fly away but is impeded by a bullet hole blasted by Erin in her final attempt to change things. The sun scorches its wings. The town has burned down; the miracles have ended; the only survivors are two teens who stand as a beacon of hope for a new day.
