Area of a Square – How to Calculate Area and Perimeter of Square?

A square is a quadrilateral that has four equal sides and four equal angles, i.e., each angle is a right angle. In other words, a square is a rectangle that has two adjacent sides of equal length. In this article, we will see how to calculate the area of a square and its perimeter in a stepwise manner with examples. Before we can discuss how to do calculations, it is best if we take a look at some of the properties of a square.

Properties of a Square

  1. The diagonals bisect each other at right angles.
  2. A square consists of four angles and four vertices.
  3. The diagonals of a square bisect the angles.
  4. The length of the diagonals is greater than the length of the side.

The properties mentioned above can be very useful while attempting to solve complicated problems that might not just require the use of the regular formula. You might have to do some manipulations based on these properties to come up with the result.

How to Find the Area of a Square?

The area of a square can be defined as space or region occupied by a two-dimensional square. It is given by the following formula:

Area of a square = side * side = side 2 square units.

To get a better understanding of how to apply this formula, let us look at a few examples.

Example 1: Find the area of a square with a side length of 5cm.

Answer: Side = 5 cm

Area = side * side = 4 * 4 = 25 sq. cm

How to Find the Perimeter of A square?

The perimeter of a square is defined as the distance around the square, or in other words, it is the length of the boundary of a square. It is given by the following formula:

The perimeter of a square = Sum of the length of all four sides

Perimeter = side + side + side + side = 4 * side units

Example 1: Find the perimeter of a square with a side length of 3cm.

Answer: Side = 3 cm

Perimeter = 4*side = 4*3 = 12 cm

Studying Methods

One of the major pain points that crop up while solving problems based on squares is that they can prove to be very confusing. There can be several complicated problems based on this concept. The best way to ensure that a student masters this topic is by using math worksheets. If a student solves problems on this topic with a gradually increasing level of difficulty, he will become confident in the subject.

There is also a lot of theory involved in the topic of squares, and hence, it is good for students to solve quizzes and play interactive games. They can assimilate the topic in a better manner and improve their accuracy and speed of solving questions. As the study of squares falls under the category of Geometry, developing a student’s visual powers is equally important as this is what aids them in solving complicated Geometrical questions.

Teaching students in such an innovative manner can prove to be daunting if the proper guidance is unavailable. Cuemath is a fantastic online educational platform that provides all these services and combines fun with learning ensuring that a student has a strong foundation in the topic.

Conclusion

Learning about squares can be an exciting journey, provided kids get the correct tools to do so. Hopefully, this article will give an insight into how to study the topic, ensuring the development of clear concepts.
